Finding a careful balance between technical limitations, market ambitions and contractual realism in Operating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) is not an easy task. Rigid battery guarantees can often be a make-or-break factor in the management of BESS-Activa. As a result, many players in the industry now claim that the use of a more flexible approach to guarantees could unlock more value of these inherently flexible assets.

Current Bess guarantee structures often limit operational flexibility and limit how assets can be used – even when technically more capable.

In contrast to commercial guarantees, which are in the short term and usually relate to components at the start of the lifetime of an active, the performance guarantees extend to 25 years and guarantee specific operational standards over time. However, these long-term conditions can significantly limit the ability to fully earn BES-assets. As a result, performance guarantees today become one of the most critical and controversial topics in Bess Asset Management.

This problem was the focus of an in -depth discussion at the ‘Get Enspired! 2025 ‘Conference, held in Berlin last week.
