The historic Howard Theater in Washington, DC, has added a new 106.82 KW solar panels on the roof in combination with storage with the help of the DC Green Bank and DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU).

The Howard Theater is the oldest theater built for Afro -American entertainment in American history and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Zonne -Upgrades, in combination with HVAC improvements, were financed by a Loan of $ 775,000 from DC Green Bank, more than $ 35,000 in DCSEU and a $ 700,500 Afro -americian rights fair from the DC Preservation League.

DC Green Bank offered support for the willingness and technical assistance through its Community Impact Initiative, which offers low -interest loans to organizations for the community. The DCSEU also offered technical reviews and support to make the project possible.

Uprise Solar, a district certified business company, installed the solar and battery system.

“The installation of solar, battery storage and cooling machine from the Howard Theater is directly in line with the goals of the mayor,” said Richard Jackson, director of the DC Department of Energy and Environment. “This project is a model of sustainable preservation, combined with cultural heritage in climate leadership. These are the type of projects that the district government wants to support, so that our city can guarantee a reliable schedule for the coming future generations.”
