The latest data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) confirm that arbitration-the practice of buying electricity when prices are low and selling when the prices are high-the dominant use case remains for battery storage systems on Utility scale in the United States.
In 2024, operators reported that 66% of all battery capacity on utility scale included arbitration under the applications, while 41% of the total capacity was mainly used for arbitration.
The next most common application was frequency regulation, which was primary use for 24% of the battery capacity. Frequency regulation plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability of the schedule by having it work with a steady 60 cycles per second.
