Chad is planning to pick up $ 1.1 billion to add 886 MW of current capacity, the majority of which are expected to be solar energy.

The goal is part of the national development plan of the country, Chad Connection 2030, which was launched earlier this year. The electricity strand of the development program sets a goal of 886 MW of extra installed capacity at the end of the decade, including 520 MW solar energy. The new power installations are expected to take the share of renewable energy in the Chad generation mix to between 20% and 30%, an increase of 9% in 2024.
Chad has one of the lowest access percentages for electricity in the world, which is 11% in 2022. The target installations are expected to increase the access percentage to 60% nationwide and up to 90% in provincial capitals.
Although Solar has been identified as the most important technology to help with the electricity transition from Chad, the abundant sunlight of the country thanks to the Chad Connection 2030 plan is also focused on the construction of hybrid and thermal power plants.
The Development Plan also undertakes to a strategy for energy sector that relates to the production, transmission and distribution of electricity and to open electricity management in the provinces of the country for private companies that work in collaboration with development partners and the International Finance Corporation.

The sun sector of Chad is still in its infancy. According to figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), the cumulative solar capacity of the country was 2 MW at the end of last year, the same figure reported since 2021.
