Battery projects dominate Belgian capacity market prices 2025 – SPE

Battery storage has secured almost all new build capacity at the latest capacity market auctions in Belgium, cementing its central role in the country’s energy supply plans until 2030.

Battery storage continues dominate the new capacity contracted in the Belgian capacity market auctions. In return, CRM payments play a key role in supporting these projects by providing guaranteed revenue, which helps increase bank financing.

On the last day of October, grid operator Elia published the results of the three CRM auctions, which are being held simultaneously for the first time this year: Y-4, Y-2 and Y-1. Elia reported that all auctions – each with their own focus and time horizon – ran smoothly and on schedule, “meaning that security of supply for the 2026-2027 delivery year is fully guaranteed,” while important steps were also taken to guarantee supplies in subsequent years.
