Georgia power has cut the ribbon on the Moody Battery Facility, one of the public utility’s first BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) locations to be connected to solar energy.
The 49.5 MW battery system, located just outside the southern Georgia city of Valdosta, can be deployed to the Peach State’s power grid in a period of approximately four hours. The flexible energy system also matches the output of the Moody solar facility to which it is linked, adding further resilience to the local energy grid.
Rick Anderson, senior vice president and senior production officer at Georgia Power, said the facility will have lasting economic impact and benefits for Lowndes County and Georgia at large.
“The successful completion of the Moody Battery Energy Storage System ahead of schedule is great news for our customers and for reliable energy in our state,” he said. “This project not only improves the resiliency of the electric grid, but also highlights our commitment to adding cost-effective resources to our diverse generation mix through programs reviewed and approved with the Georgia (Public Service Commission).”
The new facility also helps meet Georgia’s massive power needs, the utility says. Following approval by the Public Service Commission, the state has plans to add more battery facilities in the future.
Adding more BESS statewide
According to Georgia Power officials, the initial approval of the Moody facility was accompanied by three other battery projects in the state. The three projects, totaling 715 MW, were approved as part of the state’s 2023 update to its Integrated Resource Plan.
In total, the services commission has approved the construction of nine additional BESS facilities in the state. Once online, the sites plan to add more than 3 GW of energy storage to the Georgian electricity grid, so it can be deployed during peak hours or other times of need.
“The sites were strategically selected based on deployment capabilities, including the ability to locate additional resources at existing plant sites, on existing company-owned land and proximity to substations or current corporate facilities,” Georgia Power officials said. “New BESS facilities include sites in Plants Bowen, Hammond, McIntosh, Wansley and Yates, as well as standalone sites in Hall and McDuffie counties.”
To support the increasing demand for renewable energy in general, the company also received approval for two new solar energy systems and adjacent storage projects, with a total capacity of 350 MW. The projects, described as “state of the art,” include locations in Laurens and Dougherty counties.
