Heat Pumps Watch will work to change consumer attitudes towards heat pump adoption by providing evidence-based information about the technology, aimed at professionals, policy makers and homeowners.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE have founded a non-profit organization to collect, evaluate and present scientific findings on heat pumps.

Heat Pumps Watch is funded by the Climate Neutrality Foundation and will work to provide independent, evidence-based information about heat pumps to professionals, policy makers and homeowners considering a change to their heating system.

According to her website, Heat Pumps Watch will operate using information from multiple sources and will remain independent of funding from the heat pump industry, other institutions and governments.

The first initiative will be an 18-part series answering the most frequently asked questions about heat pumps, with topics ranging from heat pumps in existing buildings to options for AI integration.

Marek Miara, who has worked as a scientist at Fraunhofer ISE since 2003, is the founder of the organization. He noted that the biggest obstacle to further adoption of heat pumps is confidence in the technology, adding that Heat Pumps Watch will try to address this with easily accessible information.

The organization is also supported by an advisory board, including Dr. Peter Schossig, Head of the Heat and Buildings Department at Fraunhofer ISE. Schossig said electrification through heat pumps is crucial for a successful climate transition.

“Research institutions around the world are constantly generating new insights,” said Schossig. “Heat Pumps Watch collects these and presents them in an understandable way for different target groups.”
