The Japanese electronics manufacturer is testing its glass-based perovskite solar PV technology in office windows made by YKK AP, a construction and building materials company.

Japanese electronics manufacturer Panasonic Holdings and YKK AP, a construction and building materials company, are testing the installation of windows made with glass-based perovskite photovoltaic (PV) solar panels from Panasonic.

The focus of the test is to “examine installation methods for interior windows and confirm workability,” a spokesperson said pv magazine.

The study uses Panasonic glass-type perovskite solar PV in four YKK internal windows with weatherproof wooden sash frames measuring 723mm x 1,080mm. The project does not include the verification of power generation performance.

The transparency and patterning of the thin-film perovskite material has been tailored in each of the four prototypes, with a decorative pattern in one and semi-transparent to near-transparent finishes in the other.

The company said PV transparency is precisely determined by the degree of processing, with power generation performance changing accordingly. “This makes it possible to make flexible choices based on the building application and installation environment,” Panasonic said in a statement.

Panasonic has been developing perovskite solar technology for more than a decade. Recently, the company has promoted the use of inkjet printing for large-area devices. As of 2023, the 802 cm2 glass-based perovskite devices had a certified energy conversion efficiency of 18.1%, an efficiency result that was higher than 17.9% for a device of the same size reported in 2023 by pv magazine.
