British BESS entries recovered in November

This is evident from data from Solar Media Market Research Battery Storage: UK Pipeline & Completed Assets Database Report.

Pre-application submissions for battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in November totaled 615 MW/1,230 MWh of capacity, while full planning applications reached a capacity of 870 MW/1,740 MWh.

Submitting a pre-application is a voluntary process that allows developers to talk to local councils and decision-makers about a project, while a full submission of a planning application is the final submission and requires the inclusion of much more project information.

The figures are in stark contrast to October, when there were only 100 MW/200 MWh of pre-application submissions and 250 MW/500 MWh of full submissions. September showed a much higher figure 1,450 MW/3,800 MWh of full submissions, but no pre-application submissions at all.

All this comes as the UK’s National Energy System Operator (NESO) announced it would provide grid connections for up to 283 GW of clean energy projects by 2035 after a reform of the interconnection queue, which had increased to 722 GW pending offers, much more than necessary.

Because BESS was oversubscribed prior to and during the process, 153 GW of projects have effectively been removed from the queue. 83GW received Port 2 offers, 33GW again in Phase 1, far less than the 123GW in planning, approved or under construction.
