Belectric has signed a contract to act as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for a 210MW solar PV portfolio in the UK.
The portfolio will consist of four projects, owned by Severn Trent Green Power (STGP), which are expected to be built in Shropshire, Warwickshire, North Yorkshire and Yorkshire. Belectric, a subsidiary of European energy company Elevion Group, expects to start construction work on the portfolio next month and plans to start commercial operation of the projects between August 2027 and January 2028.
Belectric noted that some of the project sites “present specific technical challenges, including the presence of gas pipelines crossing the project areas. While the company said it would “leverage its extensive technical expertise” in completing the EPC works, it did not specify how it would overcome these site-specific challenges.
The news is also important because, according to managing director Jonathon Wroe, these are the first “scalable” solar energy projects in the STGP portfolio. The company has historically focused on generating clean energy from food waste, and Wroe called its entry into the solar industry an “important step” in the company’s future.
“These are the first large-scale solar projects that STGP is bringing forward, and they mark an important step in our long-term commitment to renewable energy,” said Wroe. “As we begin construction, our priority is to deliver these projects in a way that reflects the needs of the communities they house.”
STGP’s entry into the UK solar industry comes at a time of strong growth, with this week’s allocation round 7a (AR7a) of the Contracts for Difference (CfD) support program seeing contracts offered for 4.9 GW of new solar PV capacity, a record figure for the program. This follows delegates at Solar Media’s Solar Finance & Investment Europe event, held in London last week, calls the British CfD program the “gold standard” for investment opportunities in the European solar sector.
