NanoMalaysia unveils sodium-ion prototype that exceeds 300 Wh/kg – SPE

NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB), an agency under Malaysia’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), has unveiled a prototype sodium ion battery with an energy density of more than 300 Wh/kg, making it one of the most advanced sodium ion battery systems in the world.

The prototype was developed through the NanoMalaysia Energy Storage Technology Initiative (NESTI) in collaboration with International Battery Center Sdn Bhd. NMB said achieving this milestone is an important step towards further development, scale-up and commercial readiness, with broad industry collaborations key to advancing the technology through higher levels of readiness.

“By exceeding the 300 Wh/kg mark in the prototype phase, we demonstrate that sodium ion technology can deliver performance comparable to lithium ion, while also addressing challenges in cost, safety and material sustainability,” said Rezal Khairi Ahmad, CEO of NanoMalaysia Berhad, underscoring the significance of the breakthrough for the Malaysian energy storage ecosystem. “Establishing multiple partnerships with industrial buyers will be critical in the next steps to advance technology readiness levels and secure the interests of both local and international investors.”
