Foam Energy, which has developed a so-called ‘multi-day’ battery energy storage system (BESS), is marketing its patented iron-air battery, designed to deliver a discharge life of approximately 100 hours at full rated power.

In very simple terms: the system works by the reversible oxidation (rust) of ironas explained in a 2021 Energy storage.news interview with CEO Jaramillo.

Form Energy said this week (March 18) that a 10MW/1,000MWh project is planned in Ireland, through a partnership with developer FuturEnergy Ireland.

The startup said it is ‘expected’ to come online in 2029, aiming to demonstrate the role multi-day energy storage can play in Ireland’s energy system, from helping the country meet its energy and emissions targets to ensuring the reliability, affordability and security of the electricity grid.

Through the Policy framework for electricity storagewhich was described by the country’s government as the first policy of its kind when published in 2024, was identified as key to achieving these objectives.

“Form Energy’s battery solution will fill a critical gap in Ireland’s energy system. Their pioneering 100-hour iron-air battery technology will provide a first opportunity to deliver large amounts of clean energy over several days, boosting Ireland’s energy targets,” said Peter Lynch, CEO of FuturEnergy Ireland.

“The technology is modular, scalable and flexible on site, allowing it to simultaneously solve local grid congestion and the associated problem of wasted renewable energy.”
