Battery energy storage system (BESS) developer Fidra Energy has acquired a gigawatt-scale BESS from Innova.
At 1,025 MW, the Enderby BESS is one of the largest such projects in Britain, just behind another Fidra project, the 1.4GW/3.1GWh Thorpe Marsh BESS.
The Edinburgh-headquartered company will develop the Enderby site in Leicestershire Innova received a building permit in May 2025 (at that time the capacity was slightly lower, 908 MW).
The project is eligible to participate in the UK cap-and-floor program for long-term energy storage (LDES), with results expected in the summer of this year.
The acquisition, the value of which was not disclosed by the companies, brings Fidra’s total UK BESS pipeline to more than 4 GW. In September the company secured an amount of £445 million in new equity investments from EIG and the National Wealth Fund (the NWF) and began building Thorpe Marsh, in South Yorkshire.
A final investment decision on another project, a 500MW/1.1GWh site in West Burton, is expected this month. Fidra secured one toll agreement with Drax at half its capacity in January.
In one interview with our colleagues Energy storage.newsChris Elder, CEO of Fidra, explained that the company’s focus is on “very large batteries” with a duration of more than 2 hours. It will also look to expand into other European markets.
