Improve infrastructure And ArcLight Capital Partners cut the ribbon on the Prospect Power battery system in northern Virginia.
The 150 MW/600 MWh project, located in the City of Timberville, represents the largest standalone battery system in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and in PJM Interconnection The electricity coordination region of 13 states as a whole. The system, originally developed by Fast current energycomes online at a pivotal time in Virginia’s energy history, as the Old Dominion’s energy needs continue to rise thanks to the rise of AI data centers.
ArcLight management partner Angelo Acconcia says his company has been helping build energy infrastructure for more than two decades. Prospect Power “represents the type of infrastructure the market needs” as it enters its next phase of growth in 2026.
“As power needs increase, driven by AI infrastructure, reshoring and electrification, we believe battery storage will play an increasingly important role in providing both network capacity and reliability, and Elevate is leading the way,” Acconcia said.
The new project provides critical flexible capacity for the Mid-Atlantic region, Elevate officials say. This flexibility comes not a moment too soon.
Strengthen the grid
Virginia Chief Energy Officer Josephus Allmond says projects like Prospect Power will help the Commonwealth maintain an electric grid that is not only affordable, but also reliable and resilient. As the U.S. continues to experience power grid strain issues, large battery storage projects will be a top priority, he says.
“Utility-scale battery storage will be an important part of our energy strategy, maximizing the value of existing infrastructure while providing the flexibility needed to meet rising demand,” Allmond added. “Governor Spanberger recently signed legislation to encourage the development of additional battery storage in Virginia, and Prospect Power is demonstrating the kind of forward-looking investments that will help support both economic growth and long-term energy supply reliability.”
Prospect Power is already fully contracted under a 15-year power purchase agreement with Dominion Energy Virginia. Cedric Green, the company’s SVP of power generation, says the project will allow Dominion Energy to ensure it can reliably deliver power where and when customers need it.
In total, the project is expected to generate revenue sharing and property tax benefits for Rockingham County. Prospect Power also sponsors the annual county fair and seeks to embed Elevate as an active member of the northern Virginia community.
“Battery storage is playing an increasingly important role in supporting a reliable, resilient and diverse network,” said Stu Bresler, COO of PJM. “This project increases battery storage capacity within PJM by more than 50%, marking a significant milestone for energy storage in our region. Such resources add flexibility to the electric grid and help support reliability as demand continues to grow.”
