The Midcontinent Independent System Operator operates a high-voltage electricity network that extends from Manitoba to Louisiana and serves 45 million users. This massive operation requires maintaining a balance between energy generated and demand in the regions.

The traditional dependence on coal and natural gas power stations is changing. For example, wind farms in Iowa now generate more than 64% of the state’s electricity, and recent initiatives such as the Alliant Energy Solar Farm at Iowa State University represent the shift toward renewable energy sources. However, these sources introduce variability and uncertainty into grid management.

Zhaoyu Wang, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Northrop Grumman at Iowa State, emphasized: The energy system seeks certainty, which is a challenge with unpredictable natural resources such as solar and wind.

Wang leads the MODERNIZE project, aimed at modernizing network operations. The U.S. Department of Energy has allocated a $3 million grant over three years for this initiative, with an additional $1.1 million coming from project collaborators including Argonne National Laboratory and Siemens Corp.

The project, titled Modernizing Operation and Decision-Making Tools Enabling Resource Management in Stochastic Environment, involves the development of computational tools that enable better integration and management of renewable energy sources into the electricity grid.

Jennifer M. Granholm, US Secretary of Energy, supported this initiative, stating that effective integration of renewable resources is essential for clean energy deployment. The project is part of a larger $34 million investment by the DOE to develop technologies that improve the reliability and efficiency of the electric grid.

By aggregating smaller renewable energy sources into larger operational blocks, MODERNIZE aims to improve the stability and predictability of the electricity grid. Bai Cui, co-leader of the project and assistant professor at Iowa State, explained that this approach allows operators to manage grid operations more effectively by understanding and dealing with the uncertainties of renewable energy sources.

This initiative promises to make grid operations more flexible and efficient, which is critical to meeting the increasing dependence on renewable energy.
