A 4.4 MW solar project with 5B modular PV technology has started in Australia. The project includes 2 MW/1 MWh battery storage systems from British supplier Aggreko.

Aggreko, a UK specialist in mobile energy solutions, has commissioned a new 4.4 MW solar project to supply renewable energy to Northern Star Resources’ Porphyry gold mine in Australia, under a long-term agreement for the purchase of energy (PPA).

The Porphyry project features Australian modular solar manufacturer 5B’s deployable Maverick technology and two Aggreko Y.Cube battery energy storage systems totaling 2 MW/1 MWh.

The Maverick system is a ground-mounted solar array of up to 90 PV panels, mounted on specially designed frames that can be quickly deployed and installed. The modules are oriented in an accordion shape with a 10-degree slope and are electrically configured for quick installation.

The project in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, is integrated with a 5 MW diesel power plant owned by Aggreko. The combined project is the company’s second thermally renewable hybrid power plant in the region.

Under the long-term PPA, the project will run for a maximum of 20 years. George Whyte, Aggreko’s Managing Director for the Asia Pacific region, said the business was commissioned in February 2024. The project will ensure long-term sustainable energy supply as part of Northern Star Resources’ Carosue Dam operations in Western Australia.

Carosue Dam Operations General Manager John Albrecht said the PV array will provide a “cost-effective solution that can be scaled up and down as needed throughout the operational life cycle of our mine.” Carosue Dam Operations includes the Carosue Dam Project, the Porphyry Project and the Deep South Project, which are primarily located in Western Australia.
