Surrey Country Council has installed a pop-up solar car park and electric vehicle charging point at the Council Depot Center in Merrow, Guildford. 3ti completed the installation, which will support the council’s transition to electric fleets.

Surrey County Council (SCC) required an installation suitable for a compact area on site. As such, Papilio3, which is installed in a range of other destination and workplace charging settings, will charge SCC’s growing EV fleet.

Each Papilio3 has an installed capacity of 19.3 kWp and can produce up to 18 MWh of electricity in the first year. The pop-up solution has also been installed at Silverstone race circuit and Raigmore Hospital in Inverness – NHS Scotland’s first solar EV hub.

Each Papilio3 has three modular canopies supporting 36 solar panels, as well as a battery storage capacity of up to 250 kWh. The modular unit combines solar energy with battery energy storage and is designed around a recycled shipping container, making it easy to transport and deploy: each unit can be deployed within 24 hours.

It can be placed in difficult terrain and moved with ease, making it an ideal solution for SCC, which has signed a three-year lease agreement with 3ti.

Ben Marchant, CEO of 3ti, said: “The installation of Papilio3 at the Council Depot Center will enable the council to expand its electric fleet and deliver on its commitments to secure a greener future by decarbonising the transport sector to make. This particular application introduced new limitations that our team had to overcome, further illustrating the versatility of our innovative pop-up solar car park, which can still adapt to a range of diverse applications and conditions.”

“We have thoroughly enjoyed working with the council to overcome these challenges and are excited to broaden access to electric vehicle charging and create ‘Leave Something Better Behind’ together.”

Paul Wheadon, strategic contract group manager for the council’s highways and transport department, added: “We are delighted that Papilio3 has been installed, marking a significant milestone in our efforts to reduce emissions and expand our electric vehicle fleet.

“In addition to the benefit of generating solar energy to charge our fleet, the nature of the structure means we have the flexibility to easily move the unit elsewhere on site in the future if required, unlike other charging solutions .

“Papilio3 aligns with our broader commitment to reduce the impact of transport on the environment as we continue to work towards a greener future.”
