The battery development aims to monetize excess grid capacity and complement the 320 MW compressed air energy storage project developed by Groningen-based long-term energy storage specialist Corre Energy.

Dutch developers of sustainable energy Corre Energy and SemperPower have come together to deliver a massive battery storage facility, which will be combined with Corre’s compressed air energy storage (CAES) project in Zuidwending, in the province of Groningen, the Netherlands.

The 50/50 joint venture will initially invest €7 million in the delivery of the 320 MW two-hour battery project, totaling 640 MWh.

The battery project should “provide an additional revenue stream for the company in the near term” while complementing CAES plans, Corre said in a press release last Friday.

The large battery will share the same network infrastructure as Corre Energy’s planned ZW1 CAES project. The developer wants to use salt caverns on the site to build a 320 MW CAES facility with a maximum storage duration of approximately 3.5 days and a target start date around the end of 2026. The project will be built on hydrogen fuel from the start.

Dutch energy supplier Eneco signed a 15-year offtake agreement for the ZW1 project in January 2023 and will optimize the entire output of the storage location on behalf of Corre Energy.
