Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed on July 10 House Bill 5028, sponsored by State Rep. Ranjeev Puri (D-Canton), which gives homeowners the freedom to make energy-saving improvements to their homes, such as installing solar panels. HB 5028 nullifies certain provisions in homeowners’ association agreements that prohibit the replacement, maintenance, installation or use of solar panels.

This bill complements Governor Whitmer’s pledge to make Michigan a national leader in a 100% clean energy standard and builds on the Clean Energy and Jobs Act. By empowering people to make energy-efficient changes in their homes, homeowners save money and help Michigan build a more sustainable future.

“By signing this bill, we are making it easier for homeowners to install solar panels and other updates to save on their energy bills,” said State Rep. Ranjeev Puri. “Simply put, Michigan homeowners should not have to face artificial barriers to reducing their energy use, saving more of their hard-earned money and keeping Michigan’s environment healthy.”
