German flow battery company VoltStorage says the next phase of technology development will deliver a 20-fold increase in performance.

With the growing expansion of photovoltaics and wind energy, cost-effective long-term energy storage (LDES) is becoming increasingly important for a secure energy supply. Iron salt batteries are a promising LDES technology, and German specialist VoltStorage has now made progress in its development work.

“The positive development phases, tests and measurements to date, as well as the international recognition from science and industry, support the overall concept of the technology,” the company says. VoltStorage is now moving forward with further patent applications.

The next phase of development will include a 20-fold performance improvement, the implementation of fully automated testing systems, a comprehensive battery health management system, a defined form factor concept and a higher technology readiness level (TRL), the company says. In addition, the start of product definition is now planned for the next phase.

“We are already in discussions with potential partners to define solution concepts tailored to their specific needs,” explains Jakob Bitner, co-founder and CEO of VoltStorage. “These include energy suppliers and large industrial companies looking for cost-effective, sustainable and safe LDES solutions to improve the production and use of renewable energy.”
