EWEC has issued a request for proposals (RFP) to qualified developers and developer consortia who have expressed interest in developing a greenfield 400 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Abu Dhabi.

The utility says the RFP will be issued to bidders who have passed the qualification processes following the expressions of interest phase that took place earlier this year.

A total of 93 companies and consortia have submitted interest, of which 27 are eligible for this tender round.

The chosen developer will develop, finance, build, operate, maintain and own the BESS system and associated infrastructure. They will also act as an independent energy producer and enter into a long-term agreement with EWEC as sole customer.

“The 400 MW BESS project marks an important milestone in EWEC’s strategic efforts to increase the resilience and efficiency of the electricity network,” said EWEC Chief Executive Officer Othman Al Ali. “Utility-scale BESS technology will facilitate our rapid integration of greater amounts of solar renewable energy into the system and allow us to operate and manage peak demand more efficiently.”

The deadline for responses to the RFP is the last quarter of this year.
