AGL approves a battery project of 2,000 MWh with Fluence in Australia – PV Magazine International

Australian Gas Light Co. (AGL) has reached a definitive investment decision about its 500 MW/2,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (Bess) in Australia. It has selected Fluence as the delivery partner of the project.

Energy Group AGL has reached a final investment decision on the 500 MW/2,000 MWh Tomago BessThat is approximately 20 km northwest of Newcastle, New South Wales. It has appointed Energy Storage Company Fluence to build the project.

The construction of the Aud 800 million ($ 514 million) Battery Energy Storage System starts at the end of 2025. It is expected to go to the operation at the end of 2027 and have a lifespan of 20 years.

AGL Managing Director and CEO Damien Nicks said that the final investment decision on the Tomago Battery Project marks another important milestone in the transition and low -carbon of the company of the company Energy portfolio.

“Once operational, the Tomago battery will expand on AGL’s existing series of grid scale battery activa and contracted capacity of third parties and further improve our flexible activa portfolio,” Nicks said. “It is important that both the 250 MW Torrens Island and 50 MW broken hill batteries have delivered strong performance since they started operations, and the 500 MW Liddell -Battery Stay on the way to start the activities in early 2026. “

Nicks added that AGL has a clear path to a definitive investment decision on another 900 MW of raster scale battery projects, because it accelerates the development of a raster scale battery portfolio and a fleet of flexible assets is growing.

“We will continue to use our innovative, internal possibilities to optimize the performance of our battery activa on the grid,” said Nicks.

To date, the project is considered one of the largest single transactions in the National Electricity Market (NEM) and the largest project transaction in Fluence ever. The installation will use that of Fluence Gridstack ProAn energy -made energy storage product with optimized design and flexibility that offers scheduling possibilities and improves reliability.

President Jan Teichmann of Fluence APAC said that the project demonstrates the continuous use of the company to support AGL in his ambitious plan to use large -scale battery storage systems for a future of renewable energy in Australia.

“Australia remains one of the most important storage markets worldwide and experiences considerable growth while the country speeds up its transition to renewable energy sources,” Teichmann said.

The Tomago Bess is Fluence’s third grade battery energy storage system for AGL. The company previously completed the 50 MW/100 MWh Broken Hill Bess and is currently building the 1,000 MWh Liddell Bess.
