Ampeak ensures the planning for 1,250mWh AW2 Bess

Ampeak Energy has received a building permit from the Newport City Council in Wales for its 250 MW/1,250MWH AFON WYSG 2 (AW2) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the USKMouth Sustainable Energy Park.

The AW2 project represents a joint venture between Ampeak Energy and Econergy International. The planning approval includes provisions for removing 140,000 tons of historically pulverized stored ashes of the site, which will be reused for sustainable building products.

Newport City Council Committee has granted a building permit with conditions for the development of the battery storage, which will be expensive up to 5 hours of energy storage.

The project is part of the wider strategy of Ampeak Energy to set up the USKMouth Sustainable Energy Park as an important hub for energy storage on Grids scale in Wales.

The AW2 project represents the latest development of the battery storage on the USKMouth site, where Ampeak Energy has already made progress with its AW1 facility.

The company took the full ownership of the 120 MW/240MWH AW1 project in August 2024The acquisition of all shares of Enso Green Holdings Limited for a first consideration of £ 299,000.

The AW1 project started construction last month and is planned to connect to the network in October 2026. Full commercial activities will start in Q1 2027. Local construction company Jones Bros completes the Build and uses his earlier experience with green energy projects on the USKMouth site.

Construction activities in USKMOUTH have improved quickly, with Large delivery contracts for equipment that have already been laid down for several projects.

The Canadian solar energy has, for example, promised to provide curriculum units for the USKMouth development, while EDF has concluded a 12-year income optimization agreement on the ground to manage the commercial activities of the facility.

The USKMouth Sustainable Energy Park takes on a strategic position within the energy infrastructure of Wales. It is located on the former coal-fired USKMouth-Central, which benefits from existing grid connections and substantial available land for future development.

UK Battery Storage Sector Momentum in 2025

The AW2 planning approval is amid an important activity in the British battery storage sector in 2025, with several large projects that go through development phases and achieve important milestones.

For example, the support schedule for long -term energy storage (LDES) of the British government has a substantial support for battery storage projects, with Orgem’s cap-and-flor storage support schedule Recipients are mainly Lithium-Ion BESS projects.

Orgem revealed his final decision on 23 September 2025 and selected projects from 171 applications to receive financial support via the stabilization mechanism of the Cap-and-Floor.

The successful projects must be implemented as a minimum 8-hour system, so that a considerable storage capacity for long-term storage stability and integration of renewable energy in Great Britain is used.

The scheme is an important milestone in the British energy storage policy. In October 2024, the government introduced the LDES Investment Support Scheme to unlock billions of investments and to stimulate the technology economy of Great -Britain.

OFGEM opened the first application window in April 2025, screening projects for suitability against published criteria to guarantee an honest and transparent process.
