Perhaps capitalizing on the recognized technological prowess of ‘Silicon Valley’, an industrial area in eastern Germany named itself ‘Solar Valley’ in the early 2000s after several solar manufacturers employed thousands of people just off the main road Sonnenallee (‘Sun Avenue’). Twenty years later, Solar Valley in Thalheim, Germany, has lost its appeal, with companies leaving the area as quickly as they established themselves. Now a new Solar Valley is forming in a surprising location: the largest oil and gas hub in the Western Hemisphere. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, the United States has recently become an attractive place for…
In the face of climate change, each of us holds the power to make a difference. With rising global temperatures, melting ice caps, and extreme weather events becoming the new normal, the need for action has never been more urgent. At the heart of the solution are two concepts that can significantly alter the course of our environmental impact: “Carbon Footprint” and “Carbon Credits.” A Carbon footprint is essentially the shadow our activities cast on the planet, measured in the amount of greenhouse gasses said activity produced. Our carbon footprint takes a comprehensive of our activities that spans everything from…
The partnership will fund early-stage Solar and BESS projects in the UK. Image: Triple Point Investment manager Triple Point and large-scale clean energy company Ethical Power have announced a new partnership designed to scale up the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure. A £7m debt facility from Triple Point will provide crucial financing for early-stage solar and battery energy storage (BESS) systems developed by Ethical Power. This step supports the national goal of a completely carbon-free energy network by 2035. Jessica Fisher, senior investment manager at Triple Point, said: “We are pleased to have agreed a partnership with Ethical Power given their…
The Virginia General Assembly officially passed House Bill 1062/Senate Bill 271, which will enable third-party rooftop solar leasing in Virginia and strengthen energy choice for customers. The law will come into effect on July 1, 2024. More than 50,000 homes in Virginia have solar installed, and the market is expected to grow nearly tenfold over the next decade as customers look to take control of their energy and lower their electric bills. Expanded solar financing options, such as third-party leasing, help reduce upfront costs and make the decision to install solar more feasible for people of all incomes. “SEIA commends…
Briggs & Stratton Energy Solutions has unveiled its SimpliPHI 6.6 Home Battery System. The new SimpliPHI 6.6 battery delivers 6.65 kWh of energy and can be installed in stacks of one to three. For increased power, a system can be scaled to six stacks of three with the 18 batteries delivering 119.7 kWh with maximum continuous power of 84 kW. The SimpliPHI 6.6 battery stack uses lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, and the unit is outdoor-rated so it can be installed indoors or outdoors with no additional cabinets required. The system can be ground- or wall-mounted. Each battery is 17.3-in. tall by…
PCL construction will be the EPC for Great Bend Solar, a 48 MWAC solar energy project being developed by Doral Renewables in Meigs County, Ohio. “PCL is committed to a greener future by connecting the world’s communities with breakthrough utility-scale solar solutions,” said Andrew Moles, general manager of PCL’s solar division. “Great Bend is our third solar EPC project in Ohio, and we are honored to build it for Doral Renewables – a leader in championing the future of clean energy.” The project’s groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for this summer and is expected to create 200 jobs in the local…
An international research team has developed a new type of perovskite solar cell by using 4-phenylthiosemicarbazide (4PTSC) as a precursor additive. The device showed improved open-circuit voltage and “exceptional” long-term stability. May 1, 2024 Emiliano BelliniA group of researchers led by the Chungbuk National University in South Korea has designed a tin halide perovskite (Sn-HP) solar cell that uses an additive known as 4-Phenylthiosemicarbazide (4PTSC) to reduce imperfections in the perovskite layer. “The use of wide bandgap tin halide perovskites (Sn-HP) provides an eco-friendly option for multi-node Sn-HP photovoltaics,” said co-study author Padmini Pandey. pv magazine. “However, rapid crystallization often…
A Gresham House BESS project. Image: RASTER. Gresham House Energy Storage Fund revenues will start to recover in 2024 after a decline in 2023, fund manager Gresham House said. Gresham House Energy Storage Fund plc, listed in London under the GRID ticker, owns and operates battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the UK and announced its annual results this week (April 29). Company confirmed the ‘weak revenue environment’ of 2023 with revenue down 38% to £38.7 million (US$48 million) and EBITDA down 47%, and the fund turned to a loss of £110 million from a profit of £217 million…
A&B Smart Materials won this year’s CleanTech Challenge (CTC) with their new solar panel cooling solution and received £20,000 to help develop and improve their technology.According to a report published by the World Economic Forum, excessive heat can cause a reduction in the efficiency of solar panels, resulting in a decrease in energy output about 0.5 percentage points for every degree Celsius increase in terms of temperature. And solar farms worldwide lose up to 25% of their energy generation due to overheating alone.Backed by a team with a rich background in thermal engineering, nanotechnology and smart materials, A&B Smart Materials’…
