The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) voted May 9 to approve a controversial $24 monthly fixed charge on residential consumers who get their electricity from PG&E, SCE and SDG&E. The CPUC’s proposed decision recommending a $24 fixed charge for most households was released earlier this year. Under the proposed decision, consumers who are on California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) or Family Electric Rate Assistance Program (FERA) would pay a lower tax ranging between $6 and $12 a month respectively. The fixed charges cannot be avoided or reduced. In exchange for the fixed charge, the per-kilowatt-hour rate consumers are charged…
Clearloop, a Silicon Ranch company, announced that Intuit and REI Co-op have flipped the switch on the new 2.8 MWDC White Pine Solar Farm in White Pine, Tennessee today. Intuit and REI each supported the development of 1.4 MWDC of the solar energy project through Clearloop’s unique and innovative approach to helping organizations reclaim their carbon footprint. In addition to support from Intuit and REI, the solar project is made possible by the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Dispersed Power Program and the cooperation of local energy companies, including Morristown Utility Systems. Since 2021, Intuit has partnered with Clearloop to decarbonize the…

Biodiverse Consulting will specifically support Queequeg in achieving the necessary net biodiversity gain for projects. Image: Solar Energy UK. Developer Queequeg Renewables is working with environmental consultancy Biodiverse Consulting to strengthen biodiversity measures in five solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. Biodiverse Consulting will specifically support Queequeg in achieving the necessary biodiversity net gain (GNG) for projects, a requirement set out in the Environment Act in 2021 and which came into effect in February 2024. The law ensures that developments that impact wildlife habitat are left in a measurably better condition than before, by at least 10%. The…
Researchers in Japan spent a decade analyzing the warming effect of photovoltaic systems on the land surface temperature around the Kushida River basin and found that this value increased by an average of 2.85 degrees Celsius. May 10, 2024 Lior KahanaScientists from Japan’s Kyushu University studied the trends in land surface temperature (LST) resulting from the installation of PVs around the Kushida River Basin, which is located in central Japan and consists of three regions: Matsusaka City, Taki Town and Meiwa Town . They used convolutional neural networks (CNN) to identify PVs from aerial photographs and remote sensing to measure…
Michael Fallquist Subsidiary of Energywell Consider community solar enters ten additional markets this month, including eighteen new utilities. “The Think+ sales channel, focused on educating friends and family about better energy choices, is well positioned to be a leader in community solar,” said Michael Fallquist, CEO of Energywell. “Last year we proved the sales model as we signed up a significant number of customers against the backdrop of a startup in the community solar sector with a limited number of regions and projects available to our customers.” Think Community Solar adds Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts,…
NREL’s laser technology simplifies the recycling of solar panels Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have developed a new method using femtosecond lasers to create glass-to-glass welds in solar panels, significantly simplifying the recycling process. This innovation replaces the traditional use of plastic polymer sheets, which complicates recycling efforts. By eliminating polymers and using laser welding, the solar panels can fail at the end of their life, making glass and metal components easy to recycle and silicon reused. David Young, senior scientist and group manager at NREL, emphasized that polymers are a major obstacle…
