Emirates Water and Electricity Co. (EWEC) says it has secured four sites in the United Arab Emirates to develop 4.6 GW of solar and wind projects. December 27, 2024 Brian Publicover EWEC said it has secured four sites in Abu Dhabi to develop 4.6 GW of renewable energy projects, including PV and wind power plants. It claimed that the projects, which total 75 square kilometers, represent a crucial step in achieving Abu Dhabi’s 2035 Strategic Clean Energy Goal and the pledge to achieve net zero emissions in the United Arab Emirates by 2050. The developments include three solar power plants…
Prospects for the reuse of silicon from discarded solar panels in the production of new blocks – SPE
Scientists in the Netherlands have proposed a new test scheme for recycling silicon from photovoltaic panels at the end of their life. Their methodology helped create several wafer categories for recycling silicon for the production of new ingots, but also showed that most of the recycled silicon in the near future will come from p-type products, which will hardly be reused in a market now dominated by n-type modules. December 27, 2024 Emiliano Bellini A research group coordinated by the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) has investigated how cleaned wafers or wafer fragments recovered from end-of-life (EoL) PV…
This is the fourth consecutive quarter that renewables have made up more than half of UK generation. Image: Vattenfall. During the third quarter of 2024, renewable energy sources accounted for 50.5% of electricity generation in Britain. Electricity statistics from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) show that fossil fuel production in the third quarter was 29% lower than in the third quarter of 2023, accounting for 17.9 TWh. Solar Energy Corp. of India (SECI) has allocated 600 MW of solar power at $0.036/kWh in its 1 GW solar tender, with Acme Solar, Adani Renewable Energy and ReNew emerging as winners. December 25, 2024 Uma Gupta By pv magazine India SECI has announced the results of its latest 1 GW solar tender launched under tranche XVIII. It has allocated 600 MW to three bidders at an average price of INR 3.06 ($0.036)/kWh. ReNew won 250 MW by offering the lowest tariff of INR 3.04/kWh. Acme Solar has secured 300 MW at INR 3.05/kWh. Adani Renewable Energy required 50 MW…
Chemical battery storage, led by lithium, has made such great strides in cost, capacity and technology that batteries are now positioned to accelerate our already exponential growth in solar energy. December 25, 2024 John Fitzgerald Weaver Image: Commercial solar man By pv magazine USA “But what happens when the sun sets?” This age-old refrain now has a definitive answer: “Batteries take over.” Over the course of 2023 and 2024, lithium-based batteries have gone from merely useful and somewhat expensive, to the brink of affordability and widespread adoption. This transformation has been driven by substantial cost reductions and increases in production…

GCL Energy Technology and Ant Digital Technologies have raised CNY200 million ($27.4 million) by tokenizing solar energy in an effort to pioneer blockchain-based financing in renewable energy. December 25, 2024 Brian Publicover GCL Energy Technology, in partnership with Ant Digital Technologies, has launched China’s first blockchain-based real world asset (RWA) issuance in the PV sector, raising CNY 200 million in cross-border financing. The companies said the initiative, announced on December 23, aims to set a new standard for green finance by combining blockchain technology with renewable energy sources. The project has tokenized two solar power plants in China’s Hunan and…
The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) has approved 79 MW and 50 MW battery storage projects in Suffolk County, New York State. It grants Key Capture Energy capacity and dispatch rights under 20-year power purchase agreements (PPA). December 24, 2024 Michael Puttré By pv magazine USA The LIPA board of directors has done that approved two battery storage projects proposed by developer Key Capture Energy. The 79 MW Hauppauge project and the 50 MW Shoreham facility, both in New York’s Suffolk County, will provide the utility with capacity and distribution rights under 20-year PPAs. The Hauppauge project will sell LIPA…
Gareth Simkins, senior communications advisor for industry body Solar Energy UK, looks at the year’s progress in the solar sector. The introduction of stricter energy efficiency regulations in new homes in England has led to a sharp increase in the number of solar installations – although these can be relatively small in capacity compared to renovations. The share of new homes and buildings equipped with photovoltaic solar panels has more than doubled in the past twelve months. SEUK estimates that 36,506 new-build homes were completed in England in the third quarter of this year, with the latest figures available.[1] Figures…
