SSE Renewables now has a 300 MW BESS pipeline in Ireland. Image: SSE Renewables SSE Renewables has taken ownership of a 120MW/240MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project under development in the Irish Midlands. SSE Renewables acquired the project development rights for the Thornsberry BESS, an approved project to be located in County Offaly, from Grid Systems Services, a BESS developer owned by Low Carbon. The company did not disclose the cost of the acquisition. The project has already agreed a grid connection offer that will allow the completed BESS to import and export 120 MW to Ireland’s national grid…
A random malware variant affected approximately 800 remote monitoring devices at ground-mounted PV installations in Japan in May 2024. Tokyo-based cybersecurity company Girasol Energy has told pv magazine what happened and how PV plant owners can protect themselves against such incidents. November 6, 2024 Emiliano Bellini A random malware variant targeted around 800 remote monitoring devices at ground-mounted PV installations in Japan in May, according to Japanese PV cybersecurity specialist Girasol Energy. Although the incident caused no financial or technical damage to the solar installations, the malware used the systems as a springboard for fraudulent actions. “The random malware installed…
Clean energy in Britain by 2030? Feasible but challenging, the report said The British Labor government’s intention to decarbonise the country’s electricity grid by the end of this decade is a “huge challenge” but “achievable”, according to a report published on Tuesday. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s pledge is seen as crucial for Britain to meet its legal obligation to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 to fight climate change. – What has Labor promised? – Labor pledged at the July election to deliver ‘carbon-free electricity’ by 2030. It means that electricity production, which was previously dominated by coal…

Gentari Renewables secured the majority of the capacity, with 400 MW. Juniper Green and EG Energy each won 300 MW. Sunsure Energy secured 130 MW and Datta Infra took 70 MW. SJVN will sign power…
Aptera Motors, a California-based manufacturer of solar electric vehicles, has demonstrated its first production design vehicle. It is said to offer a daily range of up to 40 miles via its built-in solar cells. November 6, 2024 Ryan Kennedy By pv magazine USA Aperta Motors, a startup in Carlsbad, California, has done a slow-speed demonstration of its solar electric vehicle using production-intent components. Aptera said its lightweight, aerodynamic vehicle, which is integrated with solar cells, is designed for daily driving without charging. It says the vehicle will enable up to 65 km of free solar-powered driving per day. The company…
Argonne Lab uses magnetic resonance to monitor chemical changes in working lithium battery cells. without destroying the test cells. November 6, 2024 Tristan Rayner Image: Argonne National Laboratory By ESS news Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) have developed and demonstrated a new way to monitor battery degradation using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This marks the first application of this technique to monitor chemical changes in commercial pouch cells during use. This method allows manufacturers to study battery aging without disassembling the cells, providing insight into how electrode materials and electrolytes evolve over months or years of use. To…
SolarEdge Technologies announced that it has completed the first transaction for the sale of IRA Section 45X Advanced Manufacturing Production Tax Credits for a consideration of approximately $40 million, net of discounts and fees. The credits were generated by sales of qualifying US-made inverters in the first half of 2024. “The Inflation Reduction Act and the new §45X of the US Internal Revenue Code have made it possible to bring high-performance energy technology manufacturing back to the United States, and we are pleased to announce our first sale of §45X tax credits, powered by “Made in America solar inverters,” said…
An international research team has built an all-perovskite tandem solar cell based on a perovskite cell with a wide band gap and an efficiency of 20.5%. The 1 cm2 scale tandem device achieved the highest efficiency ever reported for all-perovskite solar cells of this size to date. November 5, 2024 Valerie Thompson An international team of researchers led by China’s Nanjing University has fabricated a 1.05 cm2 all-perovskite tandem solar cell with an efficiency of 28.2%. “We focused on the performance loss caused by all-perovskite tandem solar cells during the scaling process from 0.05 cm2 to 1 cm2. Therefore, our…
