BESS units are being shipped to Cero Generation’s Larks Green solar and storage project, the first to be connected at the transmission level, the company said.

The South Gloucestershire project has a 120MW grid connection and a 50MW battery energy storage system (BESS) will be added to the 50MW of solar PV that has been operational since May last year.

Construction of the BESS is underway and it will make the project the first solar and storage project to be connected at the transmission level, developer and independent power producer (IPP) Cero’s commercial manager Patrick O’Connor told our sister site Energy storage.news.

The intention was for the BESS to come online at the end of 2024. PV module and BESS company Canadian Solar provides engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, while utility EDF handles route-to-market and optimization.

Cero’s next solar and storage project in the UK will have a 57 MW BESS and 50 MW of solar, but will only have a 57 MW grid connection, which presents different commercial considerations as both assets cannot be at full capacity at the same time can discharge power.
