Battery intelligence company Brill Power has announced the launch of what it claims is the world’s first battery management-as-a-service (BmaaS) offering.

Under the system, Brill Power customers will gain access to the combined power of BrillCore hardware, BrillOS firmware and BrillAnalytics-based analytics software, enabling more advanced monitoring and more efficient use of battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Customers pay a recurring monthly fee for access to BrillAnalytics, with BrillPower supporting them in the process of commissioning and operating their BESS assets. Once batteries are deployed, asset managers can view real-time performance data, including insight into the rate of degradation of modules, racks and systems, and an estimated remaining lifespan of the asset. Brill Power’s data science team will also provide remote monitoring and diagnostic services to minimize operating and maintenance costs and system downtime, as well as recommendations on how to optimize battery performance during use to maximize return on investment. Additionally, the team will be able to provide predictive insights on errors, developed using a combination of AI and internal team experience.

As part of the service, customers will have access to Brill Power’s latest power conversion product, BESA BP6X1. Brill Power claims that this product’s active charging technology can extend battery life by up to 27%, increase usage by up to 71%, and increase safety and uptime by continuously balancing modules.

The BmaaS program will be offered on all current and future Brill Power products on three-year, five-year and custom contracts, and continuous over-the-air firmware updates will be offered to ensure the system remains accurate and continues to function at its best.

British BESS market is growing, software solutions are becoming increasingly important

As the UK BESS market grows, it is understandable that BESS developers and asset managers will look for more innovative software solutions to ensure they get the most out of their BESS assets.

A recent report from market analysis platform Modo Energy found that December 2024 saw the highest BESS revenues in Britain since January 2023, with revenues reaching £84,000/MW/year in December. This is more than double the average turnover in January 2024, when the average turnover was £36,000/MW/year. This follows analysis from June 2024, in which market analysis firm Ernst & Young ranked the UK BESS market as the third strongest in the world, beaten only by the US and mainland China.

As such, interest in asset management software services is increasing, with several major deals set to take place in 2024. In September, battery asset owner Varco Energy agreed an asset management agreement with Arenko, which will see Arenko’s Nimbus Performance software rolled out across Varco. Energy’s three long-term storage projects as they come online.

Less than a month later, Arenko signed another major software deal, this time with Gore Street Energy Storage Fund. In one Exclusive to Solar Power Portalthe companies revealed that Arenko’s Nimbus software will be integrated into 18 grid-scale battery energy storage projects with a combined capacity of just under 500 MW in the coming months.

AI, part of Brill Power’s new BmaaS offering, is also increasingly integrated into BESS’s asset management. In April 2024, the Gore Street Energy Storage Fund revealed that it had deployed cloud-based data analytics software, powered by AI, on two of its projects to manage risk and get better underwriting terms for projects in its portfolio.
