Energy Toolbase and Stellar Solar have implemented an advanced energy management system for the Mira Loma transportation campus.

Energy Toolbase and San Diego-based solar installer Stellar Solar Commercial have collaborated to deliver a solar and energy storage project for a transportation campus operated by Marten Transport in Mira Loma, California.

The project included two solar carport structures with a capacity of 197 kW. Stellar Solar also installed a 60 kW / 266 kWh BYD Chess energy storage system.

The four-hour battery life is managed by Acumen EMS control software. The primary control application for the energy storage system is the time-of-use (TOU) management of the demand charge.

The system is designed to optimize peak shaving during all peak TOU periods by discharging the battery when the site’s measured demand exceeds the thresholds calculated by Acumen EMS for each TOU period. This keeps the site’s measured demand under control, allowing the customer to get value from their energy resources.

Stellar Solar designed the project with the help of Energy Toolbase’s project modeling platform, ETB Developerto model the project’s potential savings by adding a storage system.

Marten Transport installed solar energy in 2019, which covered part of its electricity needs, but the system did not have a mechanism to handle peak loads.

Two carport structures were installed on site, with the solar system having a total installed capacity of 197 kW.

“By adding the BYD batteries, Marten now has a comprehensive solution to address both electricity consumption and demand peaks,” said Brian Grems, founder of Stellar Solar.

The system’s real-time performance and savings are visible to Stellar Solar and stakeholders ETB monitor. This tool provides insight into the operation of energy storage systems and enables continuous evaluation and optimization.

“This project demonstrates our commitment to delivering innovative energy solutions that deliver significant cost savings and operational efficiencies in California,” said Kevin Mulley, vice president of operations for Energy Toolbase.

Energy Toolbase is a software platform that provides a suite of project estimation, storage management, and asset monitoring products that help solar and storage developers implement projects more efficiently. Software-as-a-service from Energy Toolbase products are used by more than 1,000 distributed energy organizations worldwide.

Stellar Solar was founded in 1998 and has a track record of more than 16,000 residential and commercial installations, largely in California. Notable commercial installations includeCedars Sinai Hospital, Salk Institute, USA Foods and the US Navy.
