The vibrant, threefined solar façade of a residential building brought renewable energy to new heights and established a Guinness Book of World Record for the largest mural for solar panels.

In his facade, the mosaic can beautify the sunrise building, a residential complex in Alberta, Canada, as a backdrop.

However, mixed in mosaic and lively artistry are Building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV), who established a Guinness World Record for the largest wall painting of the solar panel. The solar installation is an expansion of the 85-foot long wall painting of the building, a tribute to First Nations and Chinese cultures by the local indigenous artist Lance Cardinal.

The wall painting of the local indigenous artist Lance Cardinal is a visual story of innovation, resilience and community spirit in the heart of the city.

The Sunrise Project was a collaboration between BIPV manufacturer based in Toronto MitrexAvenue Living Asset Management, MBC Group and Chandos Construction.

The project comprises 34,500 square feet and offers 267 kW of solar capacity to power the common areas of the building.

Prior to the installation, the 1970 building was in an excellent location, but became underhanded on the rental market because it needed extensive renovations. Instead of demolishing the building, Avenue Living said that it chose to upgrade the building with environmentally friendly upgrades, a more ethical approach that can often attract investors who are looking for opportunities with social benefits.

Canadas Deep Retrofit Accelerator Initiative Offers financing to projects that facilitate the development of deep retrofits in central and high-rise buildings multi-unit residential buildings.

Initially, Avenue Living considered a design with a mural, colored panels and a 60 kW system on the south facade of the building. However, a system of 60 kW was insufficient for the 12-storey building such as Avenue Living Financing of the Retrofit program of Canada without sacrificing the aesthetic vision. The building had to reach at least 50% carbon tubes to secure the financing of the Retrofit program.

To do this, Mitrex introduced a BIPV retrofit, decorated with a custom image of Artist Lance Cardinal.

Behind the artwork is a sturdy aluminum honeycomb core in combination with solar cells. The system uses an integrated Rainscreen system that includes an air and moisture barrier, continuous insulation, versatile sub-framing systems and upholstery with multiple face.

The Standaard, industry-compatible building façade installation systems used that make integration possible in existing structures. This eliminates the need for specialized installation methods, said Mitrex, which in turn lowers the costs and complexity of the project.

After performing an analysis, MitRex refined the color selection, so that the panels would maintain the solar efficiency while maintaining the integrity and functionality of the facade. Mitrex said it has carried out a full budgetary assessment, energy analysis and modeling and monster color analyzes to guarantee both performance and cost effectiveness for the project.

The project uses adapted colors that also retain high solar efficiency.

By using the BIPV façade instead of replacing the façade cladding of the building, MitRex said that the project has an investment return of four years.

In the end, Mitrex said that the original goal of the project surpassed to meet 50% of its energy needs.

Mitrex said that the Sunrise project saves around $ 80,000 annually in energy costs from year five, which is equivalent to the monthly income of the building of another seven residential units.

In 2022, Mitrex collaborated with manufacturers of sound barriers to make Photovoltaic highway noise barriers.

“Partnerships such as these enable us to decentralize energy and the way we feed our cities,” said Mitrex CEO Danial Hadizadeh at the time.
