The British Ministry of Energy Security and Net Zero (Desnz) has launched a call for evidence to increase the number of solar energy-driven carports in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The likely result of this will be a mandate that parking garages have a PV installation on solar energy, as has been the case for some time.
Reimbursing solar energy on parking garages has several advantages that Desnz wants to emphasize. It says that a mandate would be a “better deal for motorists and companies”.
The initiative would increase the British capacity of solar generation in accordance with goals for Clean Power 2030 (CP30), and offering savings on electricity costs to the parking owner.
A carport on solar energy often includes EV -charging infrastructure, which produces extra income and means that only one grid connection agreement is needed.
Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood explained: “We are committed to ensure that drivers of electric cars are always close to a charger and can save money when making the switch.
“Today is another positive example of how we use the net zero transition to give drivers more choice and to help them make ends meet with more peace of mind.”
Onsnz mentions estimates that supermarkets, retail parks and offices per year can save up to £ 28,000 by installing solar carports (this figure calculated for a parking garage with 80 space-the size that France mandates should be treated by Zonne-PV) if all the electricity generated by the solar panel was used on the spot. The call for evidence is looking for additional evidence of the benefits of such an initiative.
Earlier this year, Norwich-Renenergy, a solar energy carport, unveiled that installing carports for solar energy in more than half a million suitable parking spaces that are owned by British companies can generate 1.57 GW of solar energy.
According to the research, the amount of suitable parking places it has identified in England and Scotland in golf clubs, hospitals, hotels, airports and sports centers is “only on the surface”.
In 2019 Bently Motors installed a parking space on a solar energy at the head office in Crewe. The 10,000 PV modules of the site have a capacity of 2.7 MW and cover an area of 16,426 m². Together with other installed solar sarrays and 6.6 MW storage of the battery energy, the parking space makes all Bentley production activities possibly driven by solar energy or certified green energy.
