EDF, Fidra Energy Sign Long-Term Optimization for the largest BESS project in the UK

Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) developer Fidra Energy and Utility EDF have signed an optimization agreement in the long term for two battery units in the Thorpe Marsh project in Yorkshire.

The largest Bess project of the UK, with a capacity of 1.4 GW/3.1GWH, will optimize two large battery units that will offer 560 MW storage.

According to the agreement, EDF will offer route-to-market services and ensure that the two battery units are used effectively. The company will use its internal Powershift platform for the two units, while the National Electricity System Operator (NESO) is given quickly and flexibly backup power.

The construction of the Thorpe Marsh Bess project is expected to start this year, while the activities will start in 2027. The project will be located in a former coal -fired power station and next to a large National Grid Onderstation.

Supplier of Chinese energy storage system Sungrow supplies its liquid-cooled Power-Titan 2.0 BESS units For the project. The supply agreement signed in November 2024 between Fidra Energy and Sungrow also includes another project, the West Burton C Bess, a project of 500 MW/1GWH in 2026.

This follows the financial closure of Fidra Energy of the project earlier this week. De Bess -Developer secured up to £ 445 million in new stock investments of institutional investor, who launched Fidra Energy last yearAnd the UK’s National Wealth Fund (NWF).

The project has also obtained loan facilities of £ 594 million from various international banks, including ABN AMRO, China Minssheng, CIBC, Deutsche Bank AG, Investec Bank, MUFG, Natwest, Nord LB, Santander CIB, Siemens Bank via Siemens Financial Services, SMBC, and Standard Charter.

Fidra Energy was launched in October 2024 With a 3.15 GW development feeding line in the UK, while by 2030 the company had 10 GW of Bess projects in the United Kingdom and Europe.
