EDF Renewables UK has sustained the Finnish technology group Wärtsilä for two Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
The deal, announced yesterday, deals with the 47.5 MW/95MWH Indian Queens project in Cornwall and the 50 MW/100MWH Bredbury project in Greater Manchester. Both are currently under construction, planned with Bredbury for commercial operation at the end of 2025 and Indian Queens in the first half of next year.
It means that Wärtsilä has now been contracted for supplying eight grid -scale battery projects for EDF in the UK a total of 404.5 MW/709MWH, with the previous six already operational.
The portfolio comprises two projects that have been relatively recent: the 50MW/100MWH SUNDON Asset in Bedfordshire, which went online last year, and Bramford, a 57 MW/114MWH project in Suffolk, which became operational in April.
EDF Renewables UK placed his order for Sunday in 2022, and for Bramford in the first quarter of 2023.
Deal follows Wärtsilä’s Close of Strategic Review
In his announcement of the deal, Wärtsilä has not revealed which iteration of his Gridsolv Quantum Containerized Bess solution will be used at the Indian Queens and Bredbury projects, but said that, as with all battery storage projects of the company, they are controlled and optimized by the Gems.
Wärtsilä launched his latest iteration, Quantum 2, in March 2024. The company claimed that it has a streamlined design to make compact project layouts possible High energy density places while they conform to the standard 20-foot container form factor.
The liquid -cooled system is designed for applications that need 2 hours to 8 hours.
The launch followed at the late 2023 unveiling of quantum -high energy (Quantum He), the company said it was designed to add an energy density in steps. Quantum He gets his first field implementation at Developer-Investor Zenobē Energy’s 300 MW/600MWH Kilmarnock South South Project in Scotland, announced in February 2024.
In October 2023, Wärtsilä started an 18 -month strategic assessment of his energy storage department, Wärtsilä Energy Storage & Optimization (ES & O) and had considered ‘all options’, including disinvestment. However, it concluded the assessment in March, and said it is committed to the energy storage sector.
VK has 9GWH in total operational assets and 130 GWH pipeline with planning permission
EDF Renewables UK’s portfolio of battery storage in the country surpassed 1GWH with the start of the activities at the Bramford project.
The British renewable fabric arm of the French energy company opened a public consultation on 14 May for the proposed 250 MW Swansea North Project in Wales, for which environment and technical assessments are currently being carried out.
According to figures from the ‘Battery storage: UK Pipeline & Completed Assets Database’ Report by our colleagues from Solar Media Market Research, there are now almost 130 GWH from Bess projects with planning stamping in the UK.
It is important to note that not all that pipeline will necessarily be built up, and some can be confronted with a long -term waiting time on the grid connection.
From April there were 9 GWH of assets in the Operational Bess Fleet in the UK. According to a guest blog for sister site Energy storage. From Solar Media Market Research Analyst Charlotte GisbourneCoverage is very uneven throughout the country.
More than 2GWH of cumulative installations are located in southeastern England, while the largest average size of the project (52 MWh) is found in Scotland.
