Borussia Dortmund (bvb) recently announced plans to equip the roof of his stadium, Signal Iduna Park, with the world’s largest photovoltaic system. The club works together with RWE and the Chinese manufacturer Ja Solar, which delivers 11,000 completely black modules.

The announcement has criticized Carsten Rohr, co-chairman of the ESMC and a resident of Dortmund. In an open letter, Rohr insists on Borussia Dortmund CEO Carsten Cramer to break tires with Ja Solar.

“In the past 15 years, China has destroyed a considerable part of German and European solar production by unfair practices – including massive state subsidies and the exploitation of work and the environment,” the letter says. “This is particularly clear in the company that you have now chosen: yes Solar. This company was banned by the American authorities of the American market because of the ties with forced labor in the Xinjiang region.”

Rohr said that by working with Ja Solar risks in accordance with a company that is said to be involved in practices that contradict the values โ€‹โ€‹of the club of honesty, integrity and respect for human dignity – “Borussia Dortmund … would have done, for example, to work a European partner and work with the European solar industry.”

In 2024, Borussia Dortmund was confronted with criticism of a different choice of partner, in which many fans strongly oppose the sponsorship agreement of the club with defense company Rheinmetall.
