Just months after inaugurating the world’s largest sand battery – a 1 MW/100 MWh heat storage system – Polar Night has committed to building a project twice as large.

Polar Night Energy will deploy an industrial-scale thermal energy storage unit for Lahti Energia’s district heating network in Vääksy, Finland. The sand battery will provide a thermal power of 2 MW and a storage capacity of 250 MWh, making it the largest sand-based thermal energy storage system in the world when completed.

The plant will supply heat to Vääksy’s district heating network and is expected to reduce fossil emissions by around 60% annually, mainly through an estimated 80% reduction in natural gas consumption and reduced dependence on wood chips.

“We want to provide our customers with affordable district heating and use renewable energy in our heat production. The scale of this Sand Battery also allows us to participate in Fingrid’s reserve and grid balancing markets. As the share of weather-dependent energy in the electricity grid grows, the Sand Battery will contribute to balancing electricity supply and demand,” says Jouni Haikarainen, CEO of Lahti Energia.
