Fred. Olsen unveils plans for Scotland’s first hybrid project

Oslo-based sustainable developer Fred. Olsen Renewables has unveiled plans to develop a hybrid onshore wind, solar and battery energy storage project in Scotland.

The project, which can generate 100MW of green energy, will be located in the Scottish Borders region and will involve the implementation of a £7 million community fund.

Fred. Olsen has submitted plans for the Lees Hill Renewable Energy Park to the Scottish Government, with the project already under public consultation since 2022. The submitted proposals include six turbines up to a tilt height of 200 metres, a 60 MW solar installation and 60 MW battery energy storage.

The development will also enable a community benefit worth over £200,000 per year to the local communities closest to the site, totaling over £7 million over the 35-year life of the project.

Emily Galloway, senior project manager at Fred. Olsen Renewables said: “We are proud to be submitting proposals for our first hybrid program in Scotland. Lees Hill Renewable Energy Park will help demonstrate the potential to bring forward renewable energy developments, bring technologies together, maximize grid connectivity and ensure efficiency across the site.”

Renewco unveils 39MW BESS project in Scotland

Earlier today (April 23), Renewco Power and development partner Locogen announced that planning permission has been granted for a new solar and battery storage project in Fife, Scotland.

The £50 million project, called Glenniston Solar Farm, was given the green light after a detailed consultation period with the local community and experts in several municipalities. The storage location for solar energy and co-located batteries will have a generation capacity of 39MW.

Renewco said the site could power around 18,000 homes, saving around 22,590 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. It also said the project will include biodiversity improvements, provide a local annual community benefit fund of around £23,400 and contribute business rates to the wider Fife community.
