GCL breaks ground for a 2.4 GW pumped storage facility in China – SPE

China’s GCL Group has officially launched the construction of a 2.4 GWh pumped hydroelectric power plant in Jiande City, Zhejiang Province. This is billed as the largest clean energy project invested and built by the group and the largest pumped storage project in eastern China to date.

The EPC contract signing ceremony took place on September 8 and was attended by representatives of Zhejiang Jiande GCL Pumped Storage Co., Ltd. (subsidiary of GCL Group and investment entity of the project), Huadong Engineering Corporation, PowerChina SOCOL Corporation and officials of Jiande Municipal Government.

Located in Linchang Town of Jiande City, Zhejiang Province, GCL pumped storage power plant is in the power consumption center of Zhejiang and close to Shanghai. With a total investment of approximately CNY 12.5 billion (USD 1.76 billion), the project is expected to begin power generation before 2030.

Once completed, the power plant will have six reversible water turbine generator units with a capacity of 400 MW each. It is expected to generate an average annual electricity production of 2.52 TWh.
