Negative periods of the electricity prize are more common in Europe, driven during peak hours in the field of solar zonne energy, and batteries offer the grid flexibility required to equalize the taxes.

With batteries that bloom while project developers are scrambling to install them, the theme has investigated what this means for business cases for solar and battery.

The analysts said that the battery “investment costs are still considerable”, but pointed to falling costs and increased volatility of electricity prices. The theme estimates the current battery costs of € 75,000 ($ 88,000) to € 120,000 per megawatt, per year for systems with two hours of storage capacity, depending on the cost assumptions, lifetime and weighted average capital costs.

“Based on one cycle per day and no losses, the average distribution that must be reached per day is € 100 per megawatt hours or higher,” wrote theme, referring to a daily loading cycle of two hours and two hours. However, the report added: “In reality, the spread must be even higher to cover possible operating costs, relegation costs or losses.”
