Zonne -Glazen Maker GMB applied for this week in OpSolvenie, with 247 affected employees, several media sales points have reported, referring to the management of the company. Although an official announcement has not yet been published, the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Brandenburg has confirmed the insolvency.

“I am deeply regretted by the decision of GMB. Ultimately, it is the general terms and conditions in Europe that led to the last European solar glass manufacturer that requests insolvency,” said Minister Daniel Keller (SPD) of the state economy. “This means that the EU is consciously dependent on Chinese products.”

Keller described the development as “worrying” and “negligent”. He added that it is regrettable, because the state of Brandenburg also offered support to the Solar Glas manufacturer.

GMB from Tschernitz has held employees short work for several months. The Ministry of Economic Affairs said that it had discussed various support options with the Walker Council and the management of the company, the Brandenburg Economic Development Agency, the Spree-Neiße district and the district office in Döbern-Land.

The ministry also noted that efforts to maintain the operations on the site were made. These include political initiatives aimed at reducing energy prices and securing a resilience bonus.

In February 2025, Minister Keller wrote to the German federal government and EU trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič to argue for a resilience bonus to protect the domestic solar glass industry. He also called for an expansion of the anti-dumping and anti-subsidy measures of the European Union to combat subsidized Chinese imports. His predecessor had already made a similar request.

With the insolvency the site now seems to be over.

“Under the current circumstances there is no market for solar glass from Tschernitz,” said Keller. “Neither the state of Brandenburg, neither the municipality or the district, nor even the local EU representative can change that. At the same time, Borosil, the Indian shareholder of GMB, has shown that the power of power is demonstrated in the hope that the framework conditions within the EU will change and that production will become economically viable again.”
