General Motors has drawn a non-binding memorandum of understanding with battery recycler in Nevada Redwood -Materials Intended to speed up the implementation of energy storage systems using both new Batteries of GM and Second Life Batteries from GM-Electric vehicles produced by the US.

“The market for raster scale batteries and backup power is not only expanding, it will be an essential infrastructure,” said Kurt Kelty, VP of batteries, propulsion and sustainability at GM. “The demand for electricity is climbing, and it is only going to accelerate. To take on that challenge, the US needs energy storage solutions that can be used quickly, economically and can be made at home. GM batteries can play an integral role. We are not only making better cars – we are the future of energy silience.”

In June, Redwood Materials Redwood Energy, a new company that uses both used EV packages and new modules in fast, cheap energy storage systems that have been built to meet the rising electricity demand from AI DATACENTERS and other applications. The collaboration with GM enables Redwood to link that integration expertise to both second life GM EV packages and new batteries built by the US, which supplies a domestic solution from cell to system.

GM Second-Life Electric Vehicle batteries are already being reused to help with power, which are expected to be the largest battery development of second life in the world, at Redwood 12-MW/63-MWH installation in Sparks, NevadaSupport for the AI infrastructure company Crusoe.

“The demand for electricity accelerates at an unprecedented pace, powered by AI and the rapid electrification of everything, from transport to industry,” said JB Straubel, founder and CEO of Redwood Materials. “Both GM’s Second-Life EV batteries and new batteries can be used in Redwood’s energy storage systems, which supplies fast, flexible power solutions and strengthen the independence of America and production.”
