How long do residential solar esters last?

In the first part of this series, PV -Magazine assessed the Productive lifespan of solar panelsthat are pretty resilient. In this part we investigate residential solar in their different forms, how long they last and how resilient they are.

Inverters, which convert the DC power that is produced by solar panels on usable AC power, can come in a few different configurations.

The two most important types of inverters in residential applications are string -inverters and micro -formers. In some applications, Stringomverters are equipped with module-level Power Electronics (MLPE) called DC Optimizers. Micro-Omvermers and DC optimizers are generally used for roofs with shadow conditions or sub-optimal orientation (not to the south).

In applications where the roof is preferred for Azimut (orientation on the sun) and little to no shadow problems, a stringverter can be a good solution.

Stringom formers are generally supplied with simplified wiring and a centralized location for simpler repairs by solar technicians. Typical string -Opformers are less expensive, According to solar assessments. Inverters can usually cost 10% to 20% of the total installation of solar panel, so choosing the right type is important.

How long do they last?

Although solar panels can take 25 to 30 years or more, inverters generally have a shorter life, due to faster aging components. A common source of failures in inverters is the electromechanical wear on the capacitor in the inverter. Micro -Omvolers have a longer lifespan than string -in -formers. According to EnergySage, micro -inverters can often last 25 years, almost as long as their panel counterparts. Micro-Omsorers usually have a standard guarantee of 20 to 25 years. It should be noted that although Micro -Omwers have a long guarantee, they are still a relatively new technology in the past ten years or so, and it is still to see whether the equipment will meet its promise of 20 years.

The same applies to DC optimizers, which are usually linked to a centralized stringer converter. These components are designed to last 20 to 25 years and to have a guarantee to match that time period.

Regarding inverters, some brands have a dominant market share. In the United States, the market leader is for microinverters and phase, while SolarEdge leads at MLPE and DC Power Optimizers. Tesla has made waves in the space for residential string -inverter and assumes market share, although it is still too considered how much Tesla’s market input will make, a Roth Capital Partners sector memorandum said.

Failure

A study by KWH analyzes showed that 80% of the errors on the sinray are at the level of the inverter. There are many causes of this.

Maintenance

To make an inverter run more efficiently for a longer period, it must be installed in A cool, dry place with a lot of circulating fresh air. Installers must avoid finding inverters in direct sunlight, although specific brands of outside formers are designed to withstand more sunlight than others. And in installations with several inverters it is important to be sure that there is a correct permission between each inverter, so that there is no heat transfer between inverters.

It is the best practice to inspect the outside of the inverter (if it is accessible) every three -monthly, ensuring that there are no physical signs of damage and all ventilation openings and cooling fins are free of dirt and dust.

It is also recommended to plan an inspection through a recognized solar installer every five years. Inspections usually cost $ 200 to $ 300, although some solar contracts have free maintenance and monitoring for 20 to 25 years. During the check, the inspector in the inverter must check for signs of corrosion, damage or vermin.
