Hungary to host a 450 MW solar power plant using back-contact modules – SPE

Solarpro says it is building a 450 MW solar power plant in northern Hungary using Longi modules.

Solarpro is building a 450 MW solar power plant in Heves County, Hungary. The company said it will be the largest PV installation in the country. The Europe-based engineering, procurement, construction and operations and maintenance contractor is deploying nearly 700,000 solar panels supplied by Chinese manufacturer Longi.

The project is expected to generate approximately 470 GWh of electricity per year, which is sufficient to supply approximately 106,000 households with electricity, according to Solarpro. The companies said the plant could reduce CO2 emissions by about 415,000 tons annually by replacing fossil fuel production.

Solarpro selected Longi’s Hi-MO 9 modules for the project, which use back-contact solar cell technology. The companies said the design places electrical contacts at the back of the cell to improve efficiency, reduce microcracks in silicon wafers and support stable long-term performance under conditions such as heat, dust and variable cloud cover.

The Hungarian project expands an existing partnership between Solarpro and Longi following the completion of a 176 MW solar farm in Romania in 2024. Solarpro said the new development will be the largest back-contact solar installation in Europe.

“It is an honor to supply Solarpro with the modules for this groundbreaking Hungarian project,” said Leon Zhang, president of Longi Europe. “By working together with one of Europe’s leading project developers, we can contribute to the future of clean energy in the region while setting a new technological standard.”

Krasen Mateev, CEO of Solarpro, said the development in Hungary represents an important project for the company and will become Europe’s largest back-contact solar installation, marking an important step in Solarpro’s efforts to deliver reliable, high-efficiency clean energy across the region.

Last week, France-based startup Carbon unveiled plans to partner with China’s Longi Green Energy Technology to adopt back-contact solar technology as it reviews plans for a gigawatt-scale module factory in France, moving away from in-house development of tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon). The shift includes a 700MW pilot assembly plant in southern France to test industrial processes and supply chains while developers sign future supply agreements and wait for clearer government rules on the suitability of European solar energy.
