Iberdrola has started the process of environmental effects (EIA) for the Minhéu Hydroelectric Power Project, a pumped storage facility with 1,320 MW installed capacity. If built, this would be the largest Pomphydro station in Portugal.

The Minhéu project was designed as a supplement to Iberdrolas Alto Tâmega Hydroelectric complex by increasing the energy efficiency and storage capacity of the system. It includes the construction of a reservoir in the Cumeada area on Monte de Minhéu, hydraulically linked to the Alto Tâmega -Dam. Iberdrola has exclusive rights to use the water resources of the Dam.

The planned reservoir does not draw from extra water basins. It will only work with water that is already a license for the Alto Tâmega reservoir.

The plant runs in reversible mode, using the height difference between the reservoirs for pumps and turbine operation. Iberdrola expects the project to add between 2500 GWH and 3,000 GWH annual output.

The project is open to public consultation from Friday to 3 July.

Iberdrola commissioned the Alto Tâmega Hydroelectric complex in 2023. Gouvães and Daivões have been in commercial operation since 2022.
