UK Developer Innova has signed a 40-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Welsh Water (DWR Cymru) with two solar projects.

The PPA sees the 5 MW capacity Wrexham Solar Park Extension and the 10 MW Cefn Solar Park Supply Power to the Water Company’s nearby Fords Sewage Treatment Works. The deal is expected to cover approximately 3% of the annual electricity consumption of Welsh water.

Both solar projects are located in Noord -Wales and are currently under development. Wrexham Solar Park received a building permit in November 2022 and CEFN Park took care of the planning stamp in March 2023. Each site will also host a storage system for battery energy with 10 MW output power. The developer said that construction at the locations ‘started too short’.

The PPA also includes a commitment of Welsh Water to upgrade the internal schedule infrastructure in the Five Fords Sandolay purification installation, in an attempt to improve the reliability and robustness of the food. The British law firm TLT LLP was the legal team for the PPA.

In a press release, Andrew Dixon, head of energy sales at Innova, described the PPA as a “fantastic achievement” for both parties.

“The PPA not only offers DWR Cymru the delivery of locally produced renewable electricity and price security in the long term, but the agreement ensures that Innova will be able to obtain suitable financing for the construction of the Wrexham and CEFN projects.”
