Inter sign has expanded its quality assurance offering for the solar industry with the acquisition of Aerial PV Inspection GmbH (AePVI), which provides rapid, technology-driven inspection and diagnostic solutions for solar PV systems.

As the fastest growing form of renewable energyThe global solar market is undergoing rapid expansion, driven by accelerated investment in PV projects and rising demand for rapid quality assurance solutions that enable zero defects.

Often caused by weather, shipping or incidents during production, installation and use, damage and defects to PV modules affect long-term performance, reliability and energy yield. AePVI helps customers overcome these challenges through drone and ground-based technologies that provide rapid and highly accurate inspection for large solar PV systems. This combination of technologies and proprietary digital software positions AePVI to take advantage of the solar industry’s structural growth drivers, having already established itself in the European solar market from its base in Germany.

AePVI will be integrated into the Intertek CEA business line, complementing end-to-end quality assurance services for the solar industry by expanding the scope of services offered in the field of factory-to-field assurance through enhanced rapid drone and ground-based data collection, analysis and comparison throughout the asset lifecycle.

Gaining speed in solar PV inspection

This technology will enable Intertek CEA to accelerate its ability to inspect large solar farms, enabling better customer service, higher productivity and greater capacity.

“The silicon wafers in solar panels are fragile, making them susceptible to damage that is impossible to see with the naked eye,” said Sunny Rai, president of Electrical, Connected World and Transportation Technologies at Intertek.

A drone-mounted inspection system flies over a solar panel as part of AePVI’s rapid data collection workflow, technology that will be integrated into Intertek CEA to extend factory-to-field quality assurance for PV assets.

Ground-based AePVI inspection equipment captures highly accurate performance and defect data at a utility-scale solar site, supporting Intertek CEA’s comprehensive capabilities to detect module damage and improve long-term energy yield.
