A new solar installation near the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital in Massachusetts is presenting a new energy model, the developer says, that intersects commercial solar with community benefits.

Developed by Power Options Connect with help from Vineyard power and the Massachusetts Center for Clean Energythe new 138 kW installation is located in the hospital’s staff housing. The project is expected to generate more than $550,000 in energy bill savings for “income qualified island households” over the next 25 years.

“This project reflects our commitment to both our staff and our community,” said Michael Cosgrave, chief administrative officer of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. “By integrating solar energy into our workforce housing and partnering with Vineyard Power and (PowerOptions Connect), we can reduce emissions while creating a new, locally run resource for island households struggling with high energy costs.”

The project is the first to be completed under PowerOptions Connect’s new SolarShare program. Described by officials as a plan to turn institutional solar projects into a revenue stream with community benefits, the program supplements energy savings from solar projects with one-time grants and philanthropic capital.

Now that Martha’s Vineyard Hospital’s solar installation is complete, Vineyard Power Resilience and Affordability Program Advisory Committee will now oversee the distribution of financial benefits.

Distributing energy and its benefits

Rather than retaining all economic value on site, the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital project will be able to allocate up to 50% of financial benefits to island households with high energy use. This community benefits framework was created through a grant from Vineyard Power’s Resiliency and Affordability Program.

“The Resiliency and Affordability Program is a community benefit secured by Vineyard Wind,” said Richard Andre, president of Vineyard Power, “designed to enable local renewable energy generation, increase resiliency and promote energy affordability through local initiatives that deliver tangible benefits to the community.”

Vineyard Power is able to identify households on the Island that need the benefits most using its existing programs, including enrolling its residents in discounted utility rates and low-income shared solar projects.

In addition to helping islanders with their energy bills, the employee housing-based project marks the beginning of the expansion of PowerOptions Connect’s solar purchasing model. The company says its SolarShare initiative works with local partners to make participation as easy as possible for eligible solar community households.

“SolarShare creates a way for mission-driven organizations to use solar projects to support the people they serve, while giving donors the opportunity to fund work with measurable local impact,” said Dan Lesser, senior program manager of PowerOptions Connect. “By connecting hosts like MVH with funders and partners like Vineyard Power, we are building projects that increase the impact of donor dollars and deliver lasting local benefits.”

According to representatives, the new approach should be a boon to PowerOptions Connect and other solar companies in the Northeast in the future. The program will enable nonprofits and public entities to not only develop renewable energy on-site, but direct some of the economic benefits to households that need them.
