The Maryland Energy Administration today announced the opening of the annual application window for the Grant program for solar canopy and dual-use technologywhich provides financing for the installation of solar energy systems on parking garages and lots. This grant program allows Maryland residents to maximize the benefits of their parking lots, turning them into electricity producers while often providing shelter from inclement weather. The agency anticipates program funding of up to $4.8 million for fiscal year 2025.

“Parking garages and parking lots in Maryland have untapped potential to contribute significantly to our energy production formula, and this program will help their owners realize their full potential as sources of clean energy,” said Paul G. Pinsky, president of Maryland Energy Administration. “If Maryland is to achieve its clean energy goals, we must find new and creative ways to maximize our renewable energy production, and this program does just that.”

The FY25 Solar Canopy and Dual Use Technology Grant Program, now open through Wednesday, October 23, 2024, provides grants to support the installation of solar photovoltaic systems in parking lots and parking garages. The agency will also consider applications for projects that demonstrate other dual uses, such as installing solar energy for microgrids that strengthen critical infrastructure. For example, solar microgrids that support more than one critical community business, such as a supermarket, hardware store, pharmacy or gas station, could receive an additional incentive.

Maryland corporations, public universities, nonprofit educational institutions, local governments and state agencies are eligible for the statewide competitive program. Grants of up to $400,000 are offered for projects that install new solar canopies, and grants of up to $550,000 are available for solar canopies that provide power to microgrids that support critical infrastructure.
