Facebook parent company Meta has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with the renewable energy company Zelestra for the full output of the 176 MWdirect current Skull Creek Solar Plant in Texas. This is the seventh PPA that Meta has signed with Zelestra, amounting to 1.2 GWdirect current of potential solar capacity once the projects are completed.

Meta’s power needs are increasing as the company builds artificial intelligence data centers. In addition to matching the power needs of data centers with renewable energy, Meta is also investing in nuclear power to support a group of data centers in Ohio with an energy load of 1 GW, according to the Associated Press.

According to his websiteMeta ties its energy needs to clean and renewable energy sources – such as solar, wind, hydro and nuclear – and reportedly sources power from 127 solar projects worldwide.

Zelestra also recently announced that the 81 MWDC Jasper County Solar Project in Indiana is now operational and has begun development of a 49 MW project in Ohio.

“Our clean energy partnership with Meta is gaining momentum in the US,” said Phil North, CEO of Zelestra in the US. “We are excited to welcome full operations to Jasper County and begin construction on two more major projects, while at the same time closing a new major agreement that will enable the construction of Skull Creek in Texas. Our forward-looking partnership will see nearly 1.2 GWdirect current of new clean solar energy will soon be operational in the US”
