Swedish thin-film solar panel manufacturer Midsummer has selected a factory in southeastern Sweden to develop its new solar panel manufacturing facility, which will produce copper-indium-gallium-selenide (CIGS) solar cells for the European market.

Swedish manufacturer Midsummer has selected a location for its upcoming 200 MW factory that will produce CIGS thin-film solar cells for the European market.

The factory, which is partly financed by a €32.3 million grant from the EU Innovation Fund, will be located in the municipality of Flen, in south-eastern Sweden. Midsummer will take over the property next September, provided the EU approves the location and start of the project.

Eric Jaremalm, CEO of Midsummer, says Flen meets all the company’s requirements, including suitable buildings, a reliable electricity supply and an established local infrastructure favorable to this type of production. “We feel that we have received and will continue to receive strong support from the municipality of Flen for our investment. Flen is also geographically well located for the transport of raw materials and finished products throughout Sweden and throughout Europe,” says Jaremalm.

The factory is expected to begin production in 2026 and will employ approximately 200 people once fully operational, which is expected to be in 2028.

Midsummer’s product range focuses on light and environmentally sustainable solar panels for mainly low-bearing commercial and industrial roofs that cannot support the weight of traditional silicon panels.

Last month, the company announced a partnership with France’s Soprasolar, which will see the thin-film panels integrated into Soprasolar’s roof membranes, making them available to customers in France and other markets.
